The original members of the Mascaro Art Group came together in 2009 to work under the instruction and mentorship of David Mascaro. David had studied at the Art Students League, the School of Visual Arts, and the National Academy of Art, all in New York City. He was a renowned medical illustrator and a highly regarded long-time member of the Medical College of Georgia faculty. He died of cancer in March 2015.
As David’s last group of students, the members of the Mascaro Art Group resolved to honor his memory by incorporating his name into their group name. Today, the group comprises 14 members, and they avidly continue to pursue their art, working in oil, acrylics, watercolor, and pastel. Most of their work is representational, with occasional forays into abstract and experimental art.
The group members are Ken Blue, Michele Ashe, Mary Ann Brock, Linda Hardy, Paul Harper, Miriam Katz, Linda Lavigne, Sue Porterfield, Terry Smith, Lala Streett, Pam Thompson, Nancy Tussey, and Lou Ann Zimmerman.
The group functions as a co-op, sharing studio space in the La Pavilion shopping center. Anyone interested in visiting the studio, acquiring a painting, or commissioning a new painting should contact the individual artist. This may be done by sending the artist a note via Facebook Messenger.
David Mascaro had posted on the studio wall this quotation by the artist Laurence Brullo: “One seeks to become an artist by training the hand. Then one finds it is the eye that needs improving. Later one learns it is the mind that wants developing…….only to discover it is all along — the spirit.” The Mascaro Art Group fondly remember David as teacher, coach, mentor, and friend……..and, perhaps most of all, as the very embodiment of the Art Spirit.
